Women and Children at the Center: The Feminism in Yiddish Children’s Literature

In celebration of the publication of Honey on the Page

A Conversation with Darshanit Dr. Miriam Udel, Associate Professor of Yiddish Language, Literature and Culture at Emory University

and Dr. Laura Shaw-Frank, Director of Contemporary Jewish Life at the AJC

Join us as Dr. Laura Shaw-Frank, Director of Contemporary Jewish Life at the AJC and Darshanit Dr. Miriam Udel, Associate Professor of Yiddish Language, Literature and Culture at Emory University, discuss the feminist underpinnings of Udel’s research on Yiddish children’s literature and especially, her new book, Honey on the Page: A Treasury of Yiddish Children’s Literature (NYU Press, October 2020).

Often relegated to “stories from times gone by”, Dr. Udel’s unique analysis of these Yiddish tales brings to light an underlying feminism within that is resonant and incredibly of-the-moment. Join us for an illuminating conversation that will uncover messages that are startlingly poignant and relevant to the lives of women* in these turbulent times we find ourselves navigating.

This gathering is offered in partnership with Maharat and JOFA

As this is a jointly-sponsored event, individuals of all genders are welcome to attend.

*As always, SVIVAH welcomes anyone who wants to be included in a circle of Jewish women*. If you want to be here, we want you to be here - and welcome.

SVIVAH is dependent on the generosity of those who choose to invest in a powerful community of women. Cost should never be a barrier to participation in anything SVIVAH, but if you can help us show respect to our speakers/facilitators for their time and expertise, we would be so very grateful. www.svivah.org/donate
